Creative Writing
*** New Requirements This Year!!! ***

Students explore writing techniques through practice, group discussion, and individual critiquing sessions with faculty. Emphasis is placed on developing a keen awareness of the sound, shape, and connotative possibilities of the written word. Various types of creative writing are explored, but there will be a strong emphasis on poetry. Applicants should be aware that class discussions are on a collegiate level and may contain mature subjects. Fifteen students are accepted.

Writers with screenwriting experience and an interest in filmmaking are encouraged to audition for both Film/Video and Creative Writing. Hands-on filmmaking experience is not required if students have strong narrative storytelling abilities. Click here for more information on Film/Video.

1) As soon as possible, call the Oklahoma Arts Institute office at (405) 321-9000 to schedule attendance at one of the audition master classes. Audition spaces fill quickly. Click here for audition dates and locations.

2) Download and submit a complete application.

At the Audition:

Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in. The audition is a timed writing exercise based on your impression of artwork in a museum. You must bring a writing sample with you to the audition. The writing sample consists of up to five (5) pages of your creative writing. The writing sample may be any combination of poetry, fiction, personal essay, and/or an excerpt from a longer work. You may NOT submit a screenplay for your Creative Writing audition; screenplays may be submitted for Film/Video auditions only. DO NOT write your name on your writing sample. You will be assigned a number at your audition.

In addition to your writing sample, please bring a white pad ( 8 ½” x 11,” lined or unlined), a clipboard or other hard writing surface, a pocket dictionary, and a pencil or black ink pen. No spiral notebooks, small pads, or colored paper allowed.
